classic Greek building is the only one in Portland still owned and maintained by a Mason group. Stained-glass windows that once graced the exterior have been brought into the building's lounge and backlit, creating a room with significant ambience. Architect Richard Martin, Jr. designed other stalwart Portland structures like the Dekum Building and the University of Portland's West Hall.
* The motto on the stone scroll over the Center's entrance translates to "Hope is in my God."
Across the street are the Lafayette Apartments (1930, 730 SW 16th Avenue, Luther Lee Dougan). This unique apartment building has huge human heads projecting from the top, perhaps expressing their outrage at the use of artificial turf in PGE Park to the west (see below). The apartment building's decorated Greek panels illustrate a classical variety of dramatic, debauched, and Dionysian events.
