Before Portland's bridges existed, folks either took ferries across the Willamette or simply stayed put. Yet despite their convenience, not all Portlanders wanted bridges; it was feared that they would prohibit shipping and hurt business. In fact, for just those reasons, an injunction filed against the construction of the Morrison Bridge went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. But the city crossed the span of enlightenment, and today we take some measure of pride in being known as "Bridgetown." n
